Thank Georgia Leaders for Taking Steps to Strengthen GOSA

The Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Act (GOSA) is the most successful conservation funding program in our state’s history—preserving tens of thousands of acres here. But Georgia is in desperate need of more GOSA funding. Since 1985, more than 1.5 million acres of land have been developed in Georgia. The state’s population has been growing by an average of 100,000 each year—increasing demand for outdoor recreation while decreasing the amount of undeveloped land.

Funding is falling well short of demand. While 74 conservation projects have received grants, 204 were denied. More than $320 million in additional funding is required to preserve the land and build the parks Georgia needs.

Because of this, Senate Majority Leader Anavitarte and Representative Jesse Petrea have introduced legislation that will increase funding for GOSA. Too often, we neglect to thank elected officials who act to promote conversation. Please contact Representative Petrea and Senator Anavitarte to thank them for their leadership.

RE: Thank you for your leadership on GOSA

To

I am writing to thank you for your leadership in strengthening the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Act (GOSA), the most successful conservation funding program in our state's history.

Georgia's economy and quality of life are directly tied to the water quality of our rivers, lakes, and streams, as well as the availability and beauty of our outdoor spaces, wildlife habitats, and parks. Every year, GOSA invests millions of dollars into Georgia's rural, urban, and suburban communities, funding recreational amenities for all Georgians to enjoy, safeguarding our lands and waterways, and helping attract thousands of tourists to our state.

The program has a history of strong, bipartisan support. In 2018, legislation sailed through the Georgia General Assembly, with only one "no" vote in the House and unanimous approval in the Senate. Nearly 83 percent of Georgia voters supported the constitutional amendment creating GOSA.

I am grateful that you introduced legislation to build upon GOSA's success by increasing funding for GOSA while fixing a provision that would have cut funding in 2025.

Thank you for your leadership and commitment to preserving and enhancing Georgia's incredible outdoor spaces.

Sincerely,
