Tell Congress: Fund the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Reopen Georgia's Closed Parks

As Georgians prepared to spend Memorial Day weekend with family and friends, they learned that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had closed 23 parks on Lake Lanier and across the state, due to staffing and maintenance shortfalls. Today, several of those Georgia parks remain closed, while more than a dozen others opened only because local governments agreed to fund and staff them for one year.

These parks are more than recreation spots—they are essential infrastructure for our families, communities, and economy. Lake Lanier alone welcomes over 10 million visitors annually, supporting small businesses and generating tourism revenue that benefits all of Georgia.

Every Georgian should have access to clean, safe, and open parks. But the Army Corps of Engineers can’t do its job without the resources it needs.

Urge Congress to fund the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and reopen Georgia's parks today!

RE: Reopen Georgia's Parks

To

I am writing to express my deep concern over the understaffing and ongoing closure of many of our beloved parks across Georgia that are overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

These parks are more than recreation spots. They support our economy, provide families with affordable ways to enjoy the outdoors, and help protect natural resources that make Georgia such a special place to live.

When parks close, it doesn't just impact weekend plans. It hurts small businesses, crowds other outdoor spaces, and reduces access to nature.

Georgia's outdoor recreation economy contributes over $27 billion each year and supports more than 238,000 jobs. That success depends on keeping parks fully funded, open, safe, and adequately staffed.

In a new national survey by Trust for Public Land released alongside the ParkScore rankings, 89 percent of respondents from across the political spectrum said they visited a public park at least once in the past year. Parks are among the few places left in our society where all people, no matter their age, income, or political beliefs, can come together, unplug, and enjoy something we all value: nature, connection, and space to breathe.

I urge you to support full funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and restore access to our parks, for good.

Thank you for your leadership and commitment to preserving access to these beloved spaces.

Sincerely,
