Take Action

Keep Public Lands in Public Hands

Our public lands—enjoyed and loved by millions of people across the nation—face growing threats. Individuals interested in private profit are pushing to transfer control of these lands and remove important protections that keep them open to all of us—putting them at risk for development.

If federal protections are stripped away, public access to some of our treasured hunting, fishing, hiking, and recreational grounds will be lost. Privatization risks would skyrocket. It will take all of us working together to ensure our lands aren’t sold to the highest bidder.

Our public lands are a shared legacy. They provide access to adventure, space to connect with nature, and a chance to safeguard critical wildlife habitats. We can’t allow their exploitation for short-term gain.

But there’s hope. Outdoor enthusiasts like you have successfully fought back against devastating proposals like these before. In fact, the very idea of permanently protecting public lands was born during a time of great overuse to prevent the depletion of forests, water, and wildlife for profits and to ensure all Americans have access to the outdoors. We need to remind congress that public lands are an American tradition and urge them to act decisively to stop these threats once and for all.

Add your voice today. Tell Congress to keep public lands in public hands!

By taking action, you will receive important updates about our work and how you can help Trust for Public Land protect public land and parks for people.

RE: Keep Public Lands in Public Hands

To

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing efforts to transfer public lands out of federal protection. Such actions pose a significant threat to the preservation of cherished outdoor spaces, potentially leading to their privatization and exploitation. This shift could jeopardize public access to essential activities like hunting, fishing, hiking, and recreation - a lose-lose situation for all Americans.

Federal public lands provide beauty, recreation, and connection to nature. Plus, they form the foundation for the outdoor recreation economy which generates $1.2 trillion and supports 5 million jobs. They should be safeguarded by federal protections that ensure accessibility, preserve wildlife habitats, and sustain these landscapes for the enjoyment of future generations. States simply do not have the resources to maintain these lands, upping the chances they will be sold to cover costs - endangering our natural heritage and outdoor recreation, a vital driver of healthy economies and people.

These lands unite us and must remain a shared legacy. I urge you to oppose any proposals to transfer public lands, which could lead to privatization, and encourage you to champion stronger protections to keep them in public hands.

Thank you for your commitment to preserving our natural heritage.

Sincerely,
