Take Action

President Biden: Designate Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon as a national monument

Despite the importance of the Grand Canyon, much of the surrounding watershed remains at risk from threats such as toxic uranium mining.

Urge President Biden to protect the Grand Canyon watershed from new uranium mining by designating Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon as a national monument today.

The proposed national monument will also protect tremendous biological diversity and numerous threatened, endangered, and rare species as well as 3,000 Native American archeological sites.

By taking action, you will receive important updates about our work and how you can help Trust for Public Land protect public land and parks for people.

RE: Designate Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon as a national monument

Dear President Biden,

As an avid supporter of the outdoors, I urge you to designate Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon as a national monument. Presidents from both sides of the aisle have used the Antiquities Act to protect hundreds of millions of acres of America's most significant cultural and recreational landscapes. Many of the public lands that we know and love today, such as Arches National Park and the Grand Canyon itself, were first protected as national monuments. Without the foresight of past presidents, these places might not be the beautiful, conserved landscapes that they are today.

Designating Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon as a national monument will protect more than 3,000 Native American archeological sites ranging from settlements and habitations to temporary camps, granaries, and caches. It will also safeguard vital habitat for threatened, endangered, and rare species, including dozens of species of plants and invertebrates that are only found locally or regionally.

Protecting this region will also provide diverse users with ongoing recreation opportunities while preventing damage from new uranium mining. Uranium mining causes significant and well-documented harm to human health and natural resources. Tribal communities in and around the Grand Canyon have been the most directly and intensely affected by uranium mining, which has contaminated groundwater and surface water resources, created toxic air pollution, and disturbed and destroyed sacred lands.

As you work to protect 30 percent of America's lands and waters by 2030, I urge you to include the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon as a part of that promise. We look to you, as our president, to protect our country's most special places and this significant landscape is no exception.

Sincerely,
