Take Action

Cities need to prioritize better park systems for public health

With loneliness, anxiety, and depression on the rise, access to green space is more important than ever. Yet despite the health benefits of parks, over 100 million people across the country don’t have a park within a 10-minute walk of home.

That’s why we’re working to create more parks in cities across America—but we can’t do it alone.

Write to your representatives today to let them know that protecting public lands is crucial to our health, well-being, and future.

By taking action, you will receive important updates about our work and how you can help Trust for Public Land protect public land and parks for people.

RE: Invest in parks for public health

To [Decision Maker],

I'm writing to urge you to support investments in parks and green space that will make our communities healthier and happier.

Scientific research proves that parks, green space, and outdoor activity reduce anxiety, stress, and depression and improve physical health. Yet today, more than 100 million people across the country, including 28 million children, do not have a quality park or green space within a 10-minute walk of home. We must protect and sustain existing parks, add new park spaces, and ensure parks are core to new or redevelopment in order to provide access to parks, nature, and outdoor opportunities.

The CDC's primary recommendation to improve mental health is through social connection. By investing in physical infrastructure and programming for local parks, we will break down barriers so people can access fitness and wellness programs, sports leagues, and other health classes that connect them to nature and each other.

For these reasons, I strongly urge you to invest greatly in local parks and access to nature. If we maximize the opportunities for everyone to experience the benefits of nature, our communities will be stronger, healthier, and more connected for generations to come.

Sincerely,
