Take Action

Sign Now: Preserve Plum Island!

Plum Island’s lush meadows, lapping ocean waves, and largely undisturbed open space makes it the perfect place for wildlife—and developers. The island, which is situated about 100 miles outside of New York City, has been at risk of being sold to the highest bidder.

It is time for a permanent solution to protecting Plum Island. Urge President Biden to designate Plum Island as a national monument under the Antiquities Act today!

Presidents from both sides of the aisle have used the Antiquities Act to protect hundreds of millions of acres of America’s most significant cultural and historic landscapes. Many of the public lands that we know and love today—such as Grand Canyon and Arches National Parks—were first protected as national monuments. Without the foresight of past presidents, these places may not be the beautiful, conserved landscapes that they are today.

Please help ensure Plum Island can be conserved for generations to come—send your letter to President Biden today!

By taking action, you will receive important updates about our work and how you can help Trust for Public Land protect public land and parks for people.

RE: Preserve Plum Island

To President Biden,

As an avid supporter of the outdoors and your constituent, I urge you to designate Plum Island as a national monument. Presidents from both sides of the aisle have used the Antiquities Act to protect hundreds of millions of acres of America's most significant cultural and historic landscapes. Many of the public lands that we know and love today - such as Grand Canyon and Arches National Parks - were first protected as national monuments. Without the foresight of past presidents, these places may not be the beautiful, conserved landscapes that they are today.

Designating Plum Island as a national monument will safeguard the vast array of wildlife that make the island their home including endangered species like roseate terns. The island is also of significant cultural value to local Indigenous people, and home to several historic buildings, including places like the National Register of Historic Places Plum Island Lighthouse.

As you work to protect thirty percent of America's lands and waters by 2030, I urge you to include Plum Island as a part of that promise. As president, we look to you to protect our country's most special places - and this pristine island is no exception.

Sincerely,
