Take Action

Tell Secretary Haaland to protect these special landscapes

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and her team at DOI are reviewing and assessing new national monument proposals.

Secretary Haaland has the power to make recommendations to the president regarding new national monument designations under the Antiquities Act.

NOW is the time to raise our voices. Urge Secretary Haaland to recommend designating Avi Kwa Ame, Castner Range, the Great Bend of the Gila, and the site of the Springfield Race Riot as national monuments today!

Secretary Haaland has already done so much for our national monument landscapes. Last year, the secretary established a conservation legacy when her recommendation to President Biden led to the restoration of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments—two iconic landscapes that were shrunk by over two million acres in 2017.

The groundswell of support across the nation for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments helped encourage the recommendation to restore these lands to their full glory. We need to demonstrate that same widespread support for Avi Kwa Ame, Castner Range, the Great Bend of the Gila, and the site of the Springfield Race Riot.

Tell Secretary Haaland to recommend protecting our country’s special landscapes to President Biden now.

By taking action, you will receive important updates about our work and how you can help Trust for Public Land protect public land and parks for people.

RE: Recommend these National Monument Designations

To Secretary Haaland,

Our national monuments and public lands and waters help define who we are as a nation by telling the story of our historical, cultural, and natural heritage. As U.S. Secretary of the Interior, you have already done so much to preserve and protect our country's great landscapes, and I am very grateful.

As an avid supporter of the outdoors, I urge you to continue these efforts by recommending to President Biden to designate the following special places as new national monuments under the Antiquities Act:

Avi Kwa Ame: Stretching from the California-Nevada border to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the proposed Avi Kwa Ame National Monument is sacred to multiple tribes, and contains some of the most culturally significant and biologically diverse lands in the Mojave Desert.

Castner Range: The proposed Castner Range National Monument contains lands of historical, cultural, and ecological value. Its peaks, arroyos, and canyons are home to rare and endangered species, as well as prehistoric rock art and cultural sites.

Great Bend of the Gila: Designating the Great Bend of the Gila as a national monument will protect more than 80,000 acres of land sacred to multiple Arizona tribes and guarantee the ancient rock art and geoglyphs along the river, cliffs, and valley floor are protected from looting and vandalism.

Springfield Race Riot: The riots and massacre that took place in Springfield, Illinois, on August 14, 1908, have often been overlooked in our country's history. Designating the site of the Springfield Race Riot as a national monument will protect the site where five homes were burned to the ground and will help to honor the diversity of people and cultures in our country.

These special places should be protected now and for generations to come. Please continue your conservation legacy and recommend these places be designated as new national monuments to President Biden.

Sincerely,
