Today, we celebrate 116 years of the Antiquities Act and the cherished lands it has protected. Many of the public lands that we know and love—such as Grand Canyon and Arches National Parks—were first protected as national monuments through this act. Without the foresight of past presidents, these places might not be the beautiful landscapes they are today.
Despite the value these iconic places bring to people from all walks of life, landscapes across the country at risk of long-term development, habitat loss, and the desecration of cultural and historical artifacts are not protected under national monument status.
From Avi Kwa Ame and Castner Range to the Great Bend of the Gila, we need to make our voices heard on mountain peaks, in rolling valleys, and across the plains to designate special, at-risk landscapes as national monuments. Please sign our petition to President Biden today!
Presidents from both sides of the aisle have used the Antiquities Act to protect hundreds of millions of acres of America’s most significant cultural and recreational landscapes as national monuments. Many of the public lands that we know and love—such as Grand Canyon and Arches National Parks—were first protected as national monuments. Without the foresight of past presidents, these places might not be the beautiful landscapes they are today.
Now is the time to act. President Biden pledged to protect 30 percent of America’s lands and waters by 2030, and he can help meet this promise by conserving these precious lands as national monuments.
Please make your voice heard for our national monuments on this special day. Together, we can conserve these lands for people now and for the future.
