Take Action

Sign now to protect critical land in New Mexico

Just west of Albuquerque sits the L Bar project, a 53,000-acre expanse of private land bordered by national forest on one side and the Marquez State Wildlife Area on the other. The project is part of a landscape that is considered a sacred and culturally significant site by as many as 30 Native American tribes. Its rare ecosystem provides habitat for over 400 plant and animal species, including elk and the threatened Mexican spotted owl.

Despite the significance of the L Bar project, the land is at risk of private development. L Bar is currently privately owned, but with your help the L Bar project will be combined with the adjacent Marquez State Wildlife Area, making it the largest wildlife area in New Mexico and providing members of the Native American community with permanent access to this sacred land.

But protection is not possible without support from New Mexico’s elected leaders: Urge them to support public land protection today!

RE: Support New Mexico public lands today

To [Decision Maker],

As an outdoor enthusiast, I urge you to prioritize public lands in the state's budget in order to protect critical landscapes that will serve the New Mexico community for generations to come.

Supporting funding for public lands would expand land access and benefits across New Mexico while helping to preserve our unique and vibrant cultural identity. One such critical piece of land is the more than 50,000 acres known as the L Bar project. With funding, the L Bar project will be combined with the adjacent Marquez State Wildlife Area, making it the largest state wildlife area, and supporting the state's Mt. Taylor Cultural Property (TCP) designation, which is significant to many of our local pueblos and tribes. With proximity to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, supporting this endeavor means providing over 600,000 New Mexico residents with access to a remarkable landscape and its cultural and recreational opportunities. You have the power to make this possible.

I implore you to do everything that you can to aid New Mexico by prioritizing public land in the state's budget.

Sincerely,
