Acting Interior Secretary Scott de la Vega: Recommend restoring Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears today!
Three years ago, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments were slashed by over two million acres, amounting to the largest elimination of protected public lands in U.S. history.
Although this marks an incredibly tragic day for our public lands, there is an urgent development: Acting Secretary of the Interior Scott de la Vega will be reviewing the Trump administration’s rollbacks of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante during the next few days. He will be working with the Attorney General, Tribal governments, and other departments to review the previous administration’s changes, and making recommendations to the President on whether or not to restore the monuments to their original sizes.
We have just a few days to convince the Biden administration to make the right decision to restore our national monuments. Please sign the petition now to send a message to Acting Interior Secretary Scott de la Vega to recommend restoring the boundaries of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante.
The purpose of national monument designations is to permanently protect America’s historic and ecologically significant places. Stripping away national monument status from parts of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante undermines that very concept. The Trump administration’s decision put tens of thousands of Native American sacred sites in danger of irreversible development, looting, and desecration, in addition to locking out the public from OUR shared public lands.
That attack on our national monument landscapes has gone on far too long. We need your help right now to urge the Biden administration to reverse the disastrous decision to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, and restore these incredible monuments to their original size.
